Uncommon Territory: Contemporary Art in Alabama

To mark the bicentennial of Alabama's creation as a territory, this exhibition includes both established makers along with younger, emerging artists to examine the current vitality of artistic creativity found throughout the state.

This exhibition of works from the MMFA permanent collection will feature works that are substantially created from handmade paper using the traditional technique of pressing fibers from organic sources like wood, grass, or cotton and pressing them into flexible sheets. Twentieth-century artists using paper as supports for paintings and prints, along with others using the material for construction purposes will be included.

Like their northern counterparts, many southern photographers have pictured the landscape and some have made portraits of their contemporaries. Friends and families, community elders, and renowned artists have all become camera fodder for intrepid cameramen (and camerawomen) whose work is in the collection of the Museum.
